MydearMissWordsworth—AfterIhadputmyletterinthepostyesterdayIwasuneasyallthenightbecauseofsomefewexpressionsrelativetopoorColeridge—Imean，insayingIwishedyourbrotherwouldetotownandthatIwishedyourbrotherwouldconsultMr.Southey.IamverysureyourbrotherwilltakenostepinconsequenceofanyfoolishadvicethatIcangivehim，sofarIameasy，butthepainfulreflectionsIhavehadduringasleeplessnighthasinducedmetowritemerelytoquietmyself，becauseIhavefelteversince，thatinthepresentsituationofColeridge，returnedafteranabsenceoftwoyears，andfeelingareluctancetoreturntohisfamily，IoughtnottothrowintheweightofahairinadvisingyouoryourBrother，andthatIoughtnottohavesomuchasnamedtoyouhisreluctancetoreturntoKeswick，forsolittleisitinmypowertocalculateonhisactionsthatperhapsinafewdayshemaybeonhisreturnhome.

You，mydearfriend，willperfectlyunderstandmethatIdonotmeanthatImightnotfreelysaytoyouanythingthatisuponmymind—but[the]truthis，mypoormindissoweakthatIneverdaretrustmyownjudgementinanything:whatIthinkonehourafitoflowspiritsmakesmeunthinkthenext.YesterdayIwrote，anxiouslylongingforMr.WordsworthandMr.SoutheytoendeavourtobringMrs.C.toconsenttoaseparation，andtodayIthinkoftheletterIreceivedfromMrs.Coleridge，tellingme，asjoyfulnews，thatherhusbandisarrived，andIfeelitverywronginmeevenintheremotestdegreetodoanythingtopreventherseeingthathusband—sheandherhusbandbeingtheonlypeoplewhooughttobeconcernedintheaffair.

AllthatIhavesaid，ormeanttosay，youwillperfectlyunderstand，itbeingnothingmorethantobegyouwillconsiderbothmylettertodayandyesterdayasifyouhadnotreadeither，theybeingbothequallytheeffectoflowspirits，broughtonbythefatigueofColeridgesconversationandtheanxiouscareeventomiserywhichIhavefeltsincehehasbeenhere，thatsomethingcouldbedonetomakesuchanadmirablecreaturehappy.Norhas，Iassureyou，Mrs.Coleridgebeenwithoutherfullshareinaddingtomyuneasiness.Theysayshegrowsfatandisveryhappy—andpeoplesayIgrowfatandlookhappy—

Itisfoolishtoteizeyouaboutmyanxieties，youwillfeelquiteenoughonthesubjectyourself，andyourlittleonesareallill，andnodoubtyouarefatiguedwithnursing，butIcouldnothelpwritingtoday，totellyouhowwhatIsaidyesterdayhasvextandworriedme.Burnboththesefoolishlettersanddonotnamethesubjectofthem，becauseCharleswilleitherblamemeforhavingwrittensomethingimproperorhewilllaughatmeformyfoolishfearsaboutnothing.

ThoughIwishyounottotakenoticeofwhatIhavesaid，yetIshallrejoicetoseealetterfromyou，andIhope，whenyouhavehalfanhoursleisure，toseealinefromyou.WehavenotheardfromColeridgesincehewentoutoftown，butIdaresayyouhaveheardeitherfromhimorMrs.Clarkson.

[ForthefullunderstandingofMaryLambsletteritisnecessarytoreadColeridgesLifeandhisLetters.ColeridgeonhisreturnfromabroadreachedLondonAugust17，1806，andtookuphisquarterswiththeLambsonthefollowingday.HeoncemorejoinedStuart，theneditingtheCourier，butmuchofhisoldenthusiasmhadgone.InMr.DykesCampbellswords:—

"AlmosthisfirstwordstoStuartwere:Iamliterallyafraid，eventocowardice，toaskforanyperson，orofanyperson.Spiteofthefriendliestandmostunquestioningwelefromallmostdeartohim，itwasthesaddestofhome-ings，fortheverysympathyheldoutwithbothhandsinducedonlyabitter，hopelessfeelingofremorse—a

"Senseofpastyouth，andmanhoodeinvain;—

Andgeniusgiven，andknowledgewoninvain;—

ColeridgeremainedatLambsatanyrateuntilAugust29，afterwardstakingroomsintheCourierofficeat348Strand.Meanwhilehisreluctancetomeetormunicatewithhiswifewascausinghisfriendsmuchconcern，nonemoresothanMaryLamb，whowroteatleasttwolettersfilledwithanxioussympathytoDorothyWordsworthonthesubject，askingforthemediationofWordsworthorSouthey.Herearlierletterismissing.

"OnSeptember16—justamonthafterhislanding—hewrotehisfirstlettertohiswife，tosaythathemightbeexpectedatGretaHallonthe29th.

"ItwasthisletterofWordsworth，doubtless，whichdrewColeridgetotheNorth.DorothyslettertoLadyBeaumont，writtenonreceiptoftheannouncementofColeridgeshome-ing，goescopiouslyandminutelyintothereasonsfortheestrangementbetweenthepoetandhiswife.MissWordsworthstillhadhopesofanimprovement.Poorsoul!shewrites，hehadastruggleofmanyyears，strivingtobringMrs.C.toachangeoftemper，andsomethinglikemunionwithhiminhisenjoyments.Heisnow，Itrust，effectuallyconvincedthathehasnopowerofthatsort，andmay，shethinks，ifhewillbereconciledtothatonegreatwant，wantofsympathy，liveathomeinpeaceandquiet.Mrs.C.hasmanyexcellentproperties，asyouobserve;sheisunremittinginherattentionasanursetoherchildren，and，indeed，Ibelieveshewouldhavemadeanexcellentwifetomanypersons.Coleridgeisaslittlefittedforherassheforhim，andIamtrulysorryforher."
