DearColeridge，—Icongratulateyouontheappearanceof"TheFriend."Yourfirstnumberpromiseswell，andIhavenodoubtthesucceedingnumberswillfulfilthepromise.Ihadakindletterfromyousometimesince，whichIhaveleftunanswered.Iamalsoobligedtoyou，Ibelieve，forareviewinthe"Annual，"amInot?The"MonthlyReview"sneersatme，andasks"ifComusisnotgoodenoughforMr.Lamb?"becauseIhavesaidnogoodseriousdramashavebeenwrittensincethedeathofCharlestheFirst，except"SamsonAgonistes";sobecausetheydonotknow，orwontremember，that"Comus"waswrittenlongbefore，IamtobesetdownasanundervaluerofMilton!OColeridge，dokillthosereviews，ortheywillkillus—killallwelike!Beafriendtoallelse，buttheirfoe.IhavebeenturnedoutofmychambersintheTemplebyalandlordwhowantedthemforhimself;butIhavegototheratNo.4，InnerTempleLane，farmoremodiousandroomy.Ihavetworoomsonthirdfloorandfiveroomsabove，withaninnerstaircasetomyself，andallnewpainted，&c.，andallfor￡30ayear!IcameintothemonSaturdayweek;andonMondayfollowing，Marywastakenillwithfatigueofmoving，andaffected，Ibelieve，bythenoveltyofthehome;shecouldnotsleep，andIamleftalonewithamaidquiteastrangertome，andshehasamonthortwossaddistractiontogothrough.Whatsadlargepiecesitcutsoutoflife—outofherlife，whoisgettingratherold;andwemaynothavemanyyearstolivetogether!Iamweaker，andbearitworsethanIeverdid.ButIhopeweshallbefortablebyandbye.Theroomsaredelicious，andthebestlookbackwardsintoHareCourt，wherethereisapumpalwaysgoing.Justnowitisdry.HareCourttreeseinatthewindow，sothatitslikelivinginagarden.ItrytopersuademyselfitismuchpleasanterthanMitreCourt;but，alas!thehouseholdgodsareslowtoeinanewmansion.Theyareintheirinfancytome;Idonotfeelthemyet;nohearthhasblazedtothemyet.HowIhateanddreadnewplaces!

IwasverygladtoseeWordsworthsbookadvertised;Iamtohaveitto-morrowlentme，andifWordsworthdontsendmeanorderforoneuponLongman，Iwillbuyit.Itisgreatlyextolledandlikedbyallwhohaveseenit.Letmehearfromsomeofyou，forIamdesolate.Ishallhavetosendyou，inaweekortwo，twovolumesofJuvenilePoetry，donebyMaryandmewithinthelastsixmonths，andthattaleinprosewhichWordsworthsomuchliked，whichwaspublishedatChristmas，withnineothers，byus，andhasreachedasecondedition.Theresforyou!Wehavealmostworkedourselvesoutofchildswork，andIdontknowwhattodo.SometimesIthinkofadrama，butIhavenoheadforplay-making;Icandothedialogue，andthatsall.Iamquiteagroundforaplan，andImustdosomethingformoney.NotthatIhaveimmediatewants，butIhaveprospectiveones.Omoney，money，howblindlythouhastbeenworshipped，andhowstupidlyabused!Thouarthealth，andliberty，andstrength;andhethathastheemayrattlehispocketsatthefoulfiend!

Nevertheless，donotunderstandbythisthatIhavenotquiteenoughformyoccasionsforayearortwotoe.WhileIthinkonit，Coleridge，Ifetchdawaymybookswhichyouhadatthe"Courier"Office，andfoundallbutathirdvolumeoftheoldplays，containing"TheWhiteDevil，""GreensTuQuoque，"andthe"HonestWhore，"—perhapsthemostvaluablevolumeofthemall—thatIcouldnotfind.Pray，ifyoucan，rememberwhatyoudidwithit，orwhereyoutookitoutwithyouawalkingperhaps;sendmeword;for，tousetheoldplea，itspoilsaset.Ifoundtwoothervolumes（youhadthree），the"Arcadia，"and"Daniel，"enrichedwithmanuscriptnotes.IwisheverybookIhaveweresonoted.TheyhavethoroughlyconvertedmetorelishDaniel，ortosayIrelishhim，for，afterall，IbelieveIdidrelishhiYouwellcallhimsober-minded.Yournotesareexcellent.PerhapsyouveforgottheIhavereadareviewinthe"Quarterly，"bySouthey，ontheMissionaries，whichismostmasterly.Ionlygrudgeitbeingthere.Itisquitebeautiful.DoremembermyDodsley;andpraydowrite;orletsomeofyouwrite.Clarksontellsmeyouareinasmokyhouse.Haveyoucuredit?Itishardtocureanythingofsmoking.Ourlittlepoemsarebuthumble，buttheyhavenoname.Youmustreadthem，rememberingtheyweretask-work;andperhapsyouwilladmirethenumberofsubjects，allofchildren，pickedoutbyanoldBachelorandanoldMaid.Manyparentswouldnothavefoundsomany.Haveyouread"Coelebs?"Ithasreachedeighteditionsinsomanyweeks;yetliterallyitisoneoftheverypoorestsortofmonnovels，withthedraw-backofdullreligioninit.Hadthereligionbeenhighandflavoured，itwouldhavebeensomething.Iborrowedthis"CoelebsinSearchofaWife"ofaverycareful，neatlady，andreturneditwiththisstuffwritteninthebeginning:—

Idontexpectyoucanfindtimefromyour"Friend"towritetomemuch，butwritesomething，fortherehasbeenalongsilence.YouknowHolcroftisdead.Godwiniswell.Hehaswrittenaverypretty，absurdbookaboutsepulchres.HewasaffrontedbecauseItoldhimitwasbetterthanHervey，butnotsogoodasSirT.Browne.Thisletterisallaboutbooks;butmyheadaches，andIhardlyknowwhatIwrite;butIcouldnotlet"TheFriend"passwithoutacongratulatoryepistle.Iwontcriticisetillitestoavolume.TellmehowIshallsendmypackettoyou?—bywhatconveyance?—byLongman，Short-man，orhow?GivemykindestremembrancestoWordsworth.Tellhimhemustgivemeabook.MykindlovetoMrs.W.andtoDorothyseparatelyandconjointly.Iwishyoucouldalleandseemeinmynewrooms.Godblessyouall.

"TheheroesinHomerarenothalfcivilized—theyutterallthecruel，alltheselfish，allthemeanthoughtsevenoftheirnature，whichitisthefashionofourgreatmentokeepin."
